Mary Francis Hoh, known as MF,  was born in 1941. She and her younger brother were raised by their parents in Louisa, near her mother’s family. She attended Louisa Elementary School and Louisa County High School. After her father’s death when she was fifteen, she worked at The Jefferson Shop and then at Methodist Publishing, after graduating from high school. She describes various aspects of domestic life during her childhood in Louisa, including shopping, recreation, education, and church, particularly the differences in her own experiences before and after her father’s death.
