Interview with Sylvester and Jane Courtney

Cultural Narrative: 

Sylvester Courtney was born in 1943 and grew up on a farm in Louisa. His grandparents were large influences on his life. He attended Louisa Training School and A.G. Richardson High School. During that time, Mr. Courtney worked at a local farm and a sawmill for extra money. After high school, he worked at a labor union in Washington, D.C. and in construction. Jane Bell Courtney was born in 1944 and was raised by her parents in Gordonsville where she attended Prospect Heights School, Barboursville School #7, and Carver Regional High School. She worked at Rockingham Sleepwear Corporation before having a career in catering, eventually owning her own business. The Courtney’s discuss ways in which segregation and discrimination affected all areas of life.
